Appreciating Houseplants

Appreciating Houseplants

In 2020, almost all of us spent far more time indoors in our own homes than we were used to. Our living space also became a workspace and school space in so many cases around the world. And so, we all looked for ways to make our homes better and brighter.
One of the simplest and best ways to do that is to have houseplants. And for many more reasons than simply decoration.

Boston ferns, spider plants, and ivy are equally at home in hanging pots as on a table if space is limited.

A little greenery can brighten any space.

A little greenery can brighten any space.

Today is Houseplant Appreciation Day, started by The Gardener’s Network in order to raise awareness of the many benefits of having plants in our homes and workspaces.
We all know the psychological boost provided by being able to see a green space through our windows or to take a walk in the countryside or a park. By bringing plants into our homes we can recreate that effect and gain some other benefits too.
Some studies have shown that plants in offices can boost productivity, concentration and reaction times, especially for computer operators, as well as reducing stress, and lowering the number of sick days taken by employees.

And the presence of plants can be very therapeutic physically as well as mentally with benefits including:

  • Reduced blood pressure.

  • Decreased incidences of fatigue and headaches.

  • And for hospital patients, increased pain tolerance and reports of decreased post-operative pain.

Plants also improve indoor air quality in several ways:

  • They absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.

  • They increase humidity in the air thereby relieving many allergies, headaches, and also symptoms such as dry nose or throat.

  • They can remove pollutants from the air such as benzene and formaldehyde.

A plant in a study area can provide a calming effect and increase concentration levels.

For a long-lasting splash of colour and easy care, you have to go a long way to beat an orchid.
Phalaenopsis come in a wide range of colours and are happy in most situations out of direct sunlight. Just remember to use soft rainwater or filtered/distilled water. They, carnivorous plants, and many others can be killed or at least made very unhappy by the lime in tap water.

And most common houseplants - be they foliage only, a cactus or succulent, a carnivorous plant, or flowering - are relatively easy to look after and forgiving of any lapses in watering routine or other care. And it doesn’t have to be decorative plan…

And most common houseplants - be they foliage only, a cactus or succulent, a carnivorous plant, or flowering - are relatively easy to look after and forgiving of any lapses in watering routine or other care.
And it doesn’t have to be decorative plants you choose. Herb pots and indoor fruiting trees will do the same job and provide an edible extra.
Just find the preferred lighting position of your chosen plants and then feed and water as recommended, and they will return that care with a whole range of benefits!!

Do you have house plants in your home or workspace? If so which ones are your favourites?
Do you prefer foliage plants, flowering ones, or a mixture?
Please share anything you want about your house plants and the benefits of having a little bit of Nature around the place.
