St. David's Day is celebrated on lst March each year and is in honour of St. David the Patron saint of Wales,  (Dewi Sant)

The most well known story about him is how he was preaching to a crowd and the ground rose up and he was standing on a hill so they could see and hear him better. 

On this day, the children in Wales wear their national costume,  I did have one as a child.  It is also commemorated by the wearing of leeks and daffodils. which are Wales’ national emblems

One of the explanations for the leek being used as one of their national emblems is that St. David himself advised the Welsh on the eve of a battle with the Saxons to wear leeks in their cap so people would know if you were friend or foe.  Shakespeare also mentions in Henry V that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.  

This is the Welsh Flag traditionally flown on St. David’s Day but is not the flag of St. David himself which has a black background with a yellow cross on it

Some of the traditional food eaten on that day is lovely, and I love Welsh cakes hot with loads of butter on them.
