A Houseplant is what it says, it’s a plant that prefers being indoors to outdoors and can be found in many homes and offices for decorative purposes.  They do however have psychological effects as well helping with indoor air purification.

Some species and the soil dwelling microbes reduce indoor air pollution and absorb volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, which are generally poisonous to humans. These are absorbed the by the plant and the soil dwelling microbes.

There are flowering house plants and green ones, most of which are tropical or semi tropical, but whatever the choice they certainly make a home.  The do however need the correct environment, right light levels, soil, temperature and humidity and  proper feeding regularly and to be in the right sized pot. So many people when potting on jump to a very large pot. You should either just tidy the roots up and put fresh soil in, not forgetting food in it, as these all purpose composts only have food for about 6 weeks, and put back in same pot or just go one size bigger.

I think that houseplants make a room more homely and without them the whole thing seems bare. They don’t all need expert care, but most don’t thrive on neglect!!

Here are a few of what we have.

Flowering Amaryllis - this is the second lot of flowers we have had.

A pretty Kalanchoe, which seems happy enough on the dining room table. Quite easy to keep and I have had some for a few years now. Mothers in Laws tongue in the background.

This is a real weird one and definitely thrives on being kept very dry. It’s a Zamioculcas and has doubled in size in about a year !!

Ok, let’s have your pics and experiences of keeping house plants and what you prefer to keep. There are loads of different houseplants but I can’t cover them all, so please let have your thoughts and ideas on the subject.
