World Penguin Day
Come on, we all love penguins so none can object to a World Penguin Day.
They are such endearing creatures and generally live a very hard life in temperatures we couldn't even imagine.
There are 17 different species of penguins in the world. They are flightless seabirds and live generally below the equator. The Emperor, Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins live in and around Antarctica.
World Penguin Day takes place during the northern migration of the Adelie Penguin that is native to Antarctica. They migrate north to be able to feed during the winter months and return in the summer to build their nests on the beaches of Antarctica.
The day was created at McMurdo Station on Ross Island, Antarctica, where researchers noticed that these penguins began to migrate on this day every year, so it was created to give social awareness to these lovely creatures.
Many penguins are sensitive to climate change and because of that, they are having to migrate further to find food. Out of the 17 species, as many as 11 of them have been classified as endangered.
As they spend most of their time at sea, people should be encouraged to protect the waters as human activities such as pollution isn't helping these wonderful creatures.
To celebrate this day. you could dress in penguin colours lol, take a trip to the zoo to see them being fed, or donate to somewhere like WWF or the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition. Pick up a book and read about them. Or even sit down for an hour and watch a brilliant film about them:
However you spend the day, make it a fun one with doing something that includes a Penguin !!
All are welcome.
And please feel free to share all discussions you enjoy.
