Although what makes up sand is highly variable, the most common component is silica (silicon dioxide). Tropical beaches have a high proportion of aragonite (calcium carbonate) created by the long, slow abrasion of shellfish and coral. The officially designated diameter of a sand grain is between two millimetres and a 16th of a millimetre.
