May 25 Children's Television

Just look at those strings, but he was ace in those days

We are going to take a trip back in time to the days when kids TV was for kids. My era was the 1950's and Watch With Mother, and I'm sure some of you will remember it, and Listen With Mother, which was the radio version.

In those days, we had Muffin the Mule. I actually had a string and metal Muffin the Mule and my Dad made me a stage for it. When you look now you can see all the strings, but it was wonderful in those days. I still have a small lead one.

This is the original Harry H. Corbett, but Sooty and Sweep are still as popular today. Not many have lasted that long!

We also had Sooty and Sweep, Noddy and Big Ears and not forgetting the most famous bear ever, Winnie the Poo.

I think he has fallen from grace these days due to the stupid PC mob!

And the highlight of any kid’s day was Watch With Mother.

Mondays, was Picture Book and if you want to really take a trip down memory lane, just watch this episode, it’s a bit long but worth it.

Tuesdays, was Andy Pandy, who first appeared alone, then with Teddy, and later with Looby Loo, the famous rag doll.

In 1952, Bill and Ben were added, on a Wednesday, and even now I can understand every word they say.

Rag Tag and Bobtail were on a Thursday followed by The Woodentops on a Friday.
Such wonderful tv then.

There was also Crackerjack in the afternoons where everybody shouted and screamed when the name was mentioned.
After that, there came Blue Peter which is still on, I believe, and again was great. What you can do with sticky back plastic is nobody's business! Everybody wanted a Blue Peter Badge as well.
Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, Pinky and Perky, Postman Pat, and Paddington Bear. They came when I really had stopped watching kids TV. Along with several others.

I don’t know any of the children’s programmes now and from what I have seen, I think I got the better deal of the programmes. OK, the reception etc. was bad and the puppets you could see the strings, but oh what fun they were, and still are.

There are vids of them all on YouTube and when you have a spare 10 mins go and have a look, and just go back to your childhood.
