International Gin and Tonic Day
Gin and Tonic has been a British drink for a long long time and whether you make it at home or buy it in a pub it certainly deserves its own day. I go along with that one 100%!
The cocktail started in the reign of the British East India Co. in the 1700's. Malaria was around and a Scottish doctor discovered that quinine, a component of tonic water, could be used to treat it. Unfortunately, it tasted terrible.
British Officers in India in the early 1800 started adding water, sugar, lime and gin to the tonic water and the rest they say is history. Gin was also used in the 17th century Holland as a cure for issues such as gout, gallstones and stomach problems.
It then became a popular British drink and a classic cocktail and thus World Gin and Tonic day was born back in 2011.
There are so many different flavoured gins nowadays. Some are quite nice but nothing beats a good old fashioned G and T .
You could also have a go at making your own sloe gin. Sloes are readily available to buy and so is gin, so put the two together and you have a marriage made in heaven !!
Ok, lets have your thoughts on gin and tonics, or even gin and anything. Like it or hate it, it’s been around a long long time!
All are welcome. And please feel free to share all discussions you enjoy.
