Hello and welcome to St. George's Day.  St. George is the patron saint of England and his emblem is a red cross on white background and is the English flag, and is part of the British flag as well.  His emblem was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart and brought to this country in the 12th century.  The king's soldiers had it on their tunics to avoid confusion when in battle.

We actually know very little about St. George, so here are a few facts.
He was born in Turkey in the 3rd Century, of Christian parents.  Later, he became a Roman soldier and protested against Rome's persecution of Christians, for which he was imprisoned and tortured. However, he was true to his faith and was eventually beheaded at Lydda in Palestine on 23rd April 303.
In 1222, the Council of Oxford declared this day to be St. George's Day and he replaced St. Edmund the Martyr as England's patron saint in the 14th century.

The most famous legend is that of him slaying a dragon and although there are a lot of different stories about this the most agreed on is that a town was terrorised by a dragon and a young princess was offered to the dragon. When George heard this he went to the village and slayed the dragon and rescued the princess.  

Unfortunately, St. George’s Day isn’t celebrated much nowadays, and I doubt whether most people even know when it is. Some places still do have some parades but you see very few flags flying for that day. A fact I do find very sad.
