Touring London at The Corner Café
Welcome to London, my home town really, as the song goes "maybe its because i'm a Londoner that I love London town"!
We are going to take a short trip around London. There is far too much to cover here, but I hope you enjoy it.
Apart from being the largest city in the UK, it is the largest in Europe as well.
It is made up to 2 ancient cities, the City of London and City of Westminster, and they form the region of Greater London. The City of London is the business and financial heart of the UK. It is also known as the square mile. The City of Westminster is where Parliament and most of the government offices are located. Also Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the Queen and the Royal family is located there.
The first zoo was opened there in 1829 and is still there today but in a very different form.
The centre of London is marked by a plaque in the Church of St.Martins in the Fields.
The tallest building is the Shard 310 meters and is the 45th tallest in the world.
It has hosted the olympics 3 times: 1908, 1948 and 2012.
23 and 24 Leinster Gds. Paddington are dummy houses and they hide the tube line running underneath. The windows are painted on and there is a track behind it all.
There are at least 20 bridges over the River Thames but the most recognisable is Tower Bridge. It is quite a sight when it is open, but they don’t open it very much nowadays.
London was the first city to have an underground railway.
There are over 100 theatres in London.
London has changed so much since I was there, and I don't recognise much of the place nowadays. Whether it’s for the better remains to be seen.
And who doesn’t recognise these London icons?
A few more places I’m sure we all recognise and have been to.
Well, that brings this current tour of London to an end. I haven’t covered it all, there are far too many historical buildings etc. to post, but please let us have your pics, and thoughts of London. Do you love it or hate it, live there or visit it? Whatever your opinions are, let us have them.
All are welcome. And please feel free to recommend and share all discussions you enjoy.
There is no obligation to follow any of our informal themes. They are simply for fun. This is an open topic chat thread, so please just post or talk about anything you like!
