Towel Day 2020
Well, what a strange name for a day, but then it is a tribute to Douglas Adams, so need I say more lol! It is celebrated on 25th May each year and was first started in 2001, two weeks after Douglas Adams died. On this day, the fans carry a towel with them as described in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to show their appreciation of the book and of Douglas Adams himself.
It appears to be celebrated all over the world, but until a week ago I had never heard of it !!
The importance of a towel was explained in the original radio series of the book in 1978. The book explained it as well in chapter 3.
“A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."
— Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
As you all know, I'm sure, Douglas Adams is famous for his trilogy of books, which consisted of 5 books!! The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which is probably the most famous, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, Life the Universe and Everything, So Long and Thanks For All The Fish, and Mostly Harmless.
